A Madison man faces a criminal operating under the influence charge after allegedly driving drunk in Skowhegan early Sunday morning.

If convicted, it would be the third OUI conviction for Craig W. Broga in the last 10 years. In addition to the charge of criminal OUI, Broga, 50, was also charged with operating after revocation and aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation. He was arraigned Monday and entered no plea to the charges in Skowhegan District Court.

At around 1 a.m. Sunday, police stopped Broga after he was seen turning north on the Margaret Chase Smith bridge after leaving The Big Apple on Waterville Road driving a gray pickup truck, according to an affidavit filed by Detective Joshua King of the Skowhegan Police Department. He was weaving between lanes on the bridge and later on Madison Avenue, according to the affidavit.

Broga told police that he did not have a valid license and initially denied having anything to drink, although he refused to submit to a walking test and could not recite the alphabet. After being arrested, Broga was taken to the Somerset County Jail where he refused to submit to a breath test.

At the time of his arrest, Broga had a suspended license from a 2013 OUI conviction. That offense also took place in Skowhegan. Broga also has a 2006 OUI conviction, according to court records.

According to Maine law, a third OUI conviction is punishable by a minimum license suspension of six years and at least 30 days in jail.

Broga is being held at the Somerset County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $25,000 in property. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 28.
