A 15-year-old jogger was taken to the hospital early Wednesday evening with a separated shoulder after he struck a car while trying to cross Fairfield Street in Oakland, according to police.

Oakland police Sgt. Peter Tibbetts said he would not release the boy’s name because he is under 18, but said he lives in Burnham.

The boy was jogging north around 5 p.m. on the east side of Fairfield Street with three other boys when he tried to cross to the west side of the road and struck a 2001 Volkswagen Passat being driving north by a female driver, according to Tibbetts. He said he wouldn’t release her name because she also is a juvenile.

“He ran right into the side of the car,” said Tibbetts, who was the lone police officer at the scene. “She saw him coming and tried to avoid him, but he ran right into the the car between the passenger side door and the front tire.”

The accident occurred near Riverside Market close to the railroad tracks, according to Tibbetts. The speed limit in that area is 45 mph, he said.

The boys had been working out at Littlefield’s Gym, north of the railroad tracks, and decided to go for a run, Tibbetts said. They had turned around and were on their way back to the gymnasium when the accident occurred, he said.

The injured boy was taken by Delta Ambulance to Thayer Center for Health in Waterville, he said. Oakland fire and rescue workers also went to the scene.

There was slight damage to the car, according to Tibbetts, who said it is unusual to see a car-pedestrian accident in which the pedestrian actually hits the car.
