BRUNSWICK — Chris Cameron hit a two-out, two-run single as a part of a three-run seventh inning as the Bowdoin baseball team took the opener in its three-game series with Colby 7-4 Friday at Pickard Field in Brunswick.

The Mules (15-10, 4-6 New England Small College Athletic Conference) had tied the game up in the top half of the inning when Tommy Forese scored on a groundout to the pitcher from Andy Currier. From there, Colby could not get anything going against Bowdoin (12-16, 4-5 NESCAC) starter Henry Van Zant as the senior right-hander threw all nine innings and struck out seven.

SOFTBALL

TUFTS 9, COLBY 0: Allyson Fournier struck out 13 of the 16 batters she faced to pace the unbeaten Jumbos to a five-inning victory over the Mules in Medford, Mass.

Cassie Ruscz belted two home runs for Tufts (34-0, 10-0 NESCAC), who has won 47 straight NESCAC East games and 36 in a row overall.

Katie McLaughlin had the lone hit for Colby (10-16, 3-6 NESCAC) on an infield single in the fifth inning.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 3-3, UM-FARMINGTON 2-1: The Beavers dropped a pair of closely contested games with the Pilgrims in Farmington.

In Game 1, UMF (4-20, 1-9 North Atlantic Conference) jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Erskine graduate Meryl Bond scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a triple and Katie Clark scored on a ground out from Kennadi Grover. The Beavers carried the lead all the way until the seventh inning where the Pilgrims’ Brielle Pennington and Kiley Williams scored on a sacrifice fly to left from Maranda Johnson.

In the second game NEC (17-13, 6-4 NAC) pitcher Debra Mazzeo kept the Beavers in check, allowing just the one run on two hits while striking out three.

CASTLETON 4-8, THOMAS 2-0: The Terriers came away on the wrong end of a doubleheader with the conference-leading Spartans in Waterville.

Thomas (8-19, 4-4 NAC) jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning of the opener when Messalonskee graduate Briana Warren scored on a fielder’s choice by fellow former Eagle Alyssa Eugley, but could not hold on as Castleton (16-9, 7-1 NAC) took the lead for good with a pair of runs on a double from Brittany Brayman in the top of the sixth. Cony grad Sonja Morse struck out six in the loss and also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Neither team could gain an advantage through the first three innings of Game 2, but in the fourth the Spartans took control with a trio of runs and followed it up with five more in the following inning.
