Portland set a record Tuesday for the coldest high temperature for June 2, according to the National Weather Service.

James Brown, a meteorologist with the weather service in Gray, said the day’s high of 50 degrees broke the record of 54 degrees, set on June 2, 2001.

“It has never been that cold for a high on this date,” Brown said, explaining what the cold high temperature means.

While June has started off cold, Brown said, Maine had been extremely dry until now. Brown said the 2.8 inches of rain that has fallen on Portland since Friday was desperately needed.
