An Oakland man remains held without bail on a probation violation following his arrest Thursday morning for allegedly stealing a car in Norridgewock then driving it to Fairfield, where police caught up with him.
Joshua Cummings, 30, allegedly took a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox from a home on Madison Road in Norridgewock, where he had spent the night, Staff Sgt. Michael Knight of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said by phone Friday.
Knight said there had been a party at the alleged victim’s home the night before. He said when she got up Thursday morning her car was gone and so was Cummings.
Fairfield police got a call at 10:30 Thursday morning from a person who had found the car on Crane Drive at a house belonging to Cummings’ sister, Knight said. Fairfield police officers found Cummings and held him while Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Blodgett made his way to the scene where Cummings was arrested.
The theft charge against Cummings is a felony because he has theft convictions and because of the estimated value of the car, Knight said.
He is charged additionally with violating conditions of release. Knight said the car was recovered and was not damaged.
“His defense was she gave him permission to use it and gave him the keys,” Knight said, “although that’s obviously not the case.”
It was not known Friday if Cummings had been to court yet or if he has a lawyer.
