KENNEBUNK – Tom’s of Maine is awarding $1 million to nonprofits for this year’s “50 States for Good” initiative.
The Kennebunk-based company, which makes natural personal care products, donates 10 percent of profits to charity, and this year it doubled the funding for a program that awarded $20,000 apiece to programs in each state. Recipients included food kitchens, environmental centers, ministries and even a youth orchestra and an animal sanctuary.
Tom’s of Maine was founded in 1970. In addition to donating a share of its profits, it also encourages workers to use part of their paid time off to volunteer.
