Almost every story lately about a bad or fatal accident involves a driver who crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The latest victim was a 17-year-old boy.

It should be no mystery as to why this is happening. It’s not people eating, shaving or putting on lipstick. Many of these accidents happen because someone is preoccupied with their cellphone. Hands-free phone calls are no better; they’re equally distracting.

I spend a lot of time on the road, and it’s a daily occurrence when some oncoming vehicle randomly veers into my lane.

Somewhere technology must exist so that either the car doesn’t start when it detects a powered-up cellphone, or the phone is rendered inoperative when the car is running. Let’s get serious about this.
