The town of Farmingdale’s Selectboard is considering omitting sidewalk plowing for Sheldon Street this winter.

With the increased number of pedestrian deaths in Maine reported recently, this seems like a poor way to save a little money. Not only do children walk to bus stops, but Sheldon Street is one of the main connectors to the Rail Trail.

Many residents of Northern Avenue and beyond use Sheldon Street to access the trail year round. Sheldon Street is a narrow road, made even more so once snow falls. Denying residents sidewalk access is a dangerous idea.

I urge Farmingdale residents to contact their town representatives and request sidewalk plowing to continue. The small amount of money saved is not worth a potential loss of life.
