A 67-year-old Corinna woman died and several other people were injured in an accident Saturday night on U.S. Route 2 in Pittsfield, according to state police.
Camille Ortolano was a passenger in a Jeep Wrangler driven by her husband, Joseph Ortolano Sr., 68, said Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland in a press release Sunday.
The Jeep was traveling east on Route 2 around 8:30 p.m. and struck a patch of black ice, causing Ortolano to lose control and strike a Chevy Tahoe head on, according to McCausland.
The Tahoe was driven by Michael Pease, 43, of Industry, and passengers in the car included his wife, Heather Willis, 41, and their five children ages 8 to 17. All seven were taken to Sebasticook Valley Health with injuries that were not life-threatening, the release said.
Joseph Ortolano was also taken to Sebasticook Valley Health with multiple injuries. His wife died at the scene.
A spokeswoman for Sebasticook Valley Health said Sunday that the adults involved in the crash were no longer at the Pittsfield hospital. Information on the children was not available.
A nursing supervisor at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor said she was not authorized to give out information on any of the adults.
The crash took place between Beans Corner Road and Higgins Road. Road conditions at the time of the accident were icy and were believed to have been a factor in the crash. The road was closed until midnight.
Maine State Police, the Pittsfield Police Department, Fairfield Police Department, Detroit Fire Department and emergency medical services from Canaan and Pittsfield responded to the scene.
