Highlights of the Newport town meeting and election, held Saturday.
BUDGET: $3,030,688 approved, about $242,000, or 8 percent, more than last year.
MAJOR ITEMS APPROVED: Of the $242,000 increase in the town budget, $190,000 reflects the first year of debt payments on Newport’s new public safety complex, town garage, a new dump truck and two new police cruisers. Voters also agreed to raise an additional $60,000 for the fire department, bringing that budget to $205,208.

ATTENDANCE: 58
ELECTIONS: Selectman: Thomas Breitweg, with 65 votes and Randy Davis, with 74 votes, were both elected uncontested for three-year terms.
Regional School Unit 19 director: Evelyn Hickey was elected to a three-year term unopposed with 69 votes.
Michael Jones was elected to the Sanitary District board of trustees for a three-year term with 80 votes.
Frederick Hickey was elected to the Water District board for a five-year term with 74 votes.
