A few weeks ago, I heard, secondhand, “Steve Aucoin hates Colby.” How absurd! I am a progressive and I waste no time on “hate.” At least, 10 times I have publicly stated my position. I am an advocate for the taxpayers of Waterville. I stand against any corporate/legal arrangement that takes from those who have less and gives that to those who have more.
I appreciate the Colby investment in downtown. I understand also they have to do this. It is a necessity for their future enrollments. It will do little to decrease the tax rate that is one of the highest in the state. And it does nothing to address the issue of tax fairness.
There are numerous options to be pursued but I note that those possessing the no-pay privilege offer nothing but the status quo. I remind them and all that we have 13 square miles and 30 percent of that is tax exempt by state law. I also remind them that the state has reneged on its revenue sharing agreement of years.
When do we stop acting like compliant victims. Why would we willingly accept the role of Blanche Dubois: “I have always depended upon the kindness of strangers.”
As a progressive, all I seek, all I will continue to seek, is justice. To all those who will not hear, I see this intellectual dishonesty for what it is.
