Summer is over.

Yes, I know recent dew points and temperatures suggest otherwise, but the official start to fall sports season — which came Monday (bright and early for some) — also marks the unofficial end to summer.

Sigh.

Football, field hockey, soccer, cross country, golf, cheerleading and volleyball teams opened things up Monday, with some holding two practices — one in the morning and another in the afternoon/early evening.

“We’re all 0-0 now,” Gardiner girls soccer coach Chad Kirk said.

Indeed, although that will soon change.

The regular season for all begins in a few short weeks — golf teams can begin play as soon as Aug. 26; field hockey five days later.

Here’s hoping for a fun, safe and productive preseason, everybody.
