A Winslow man is free on bail following his arrest Tuesday on charges that he sexually assaulted a woman while at a party in Fairfield.

Nicholas D. Denis, 19, is charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A felony, punishable by up to 30 years in prison. He also is charged with assault, a Class D misdemeanor.

The woman told police that an earring had been ripped from her ear and that she had been thrown around by Denis during the Sept. 11 sexual assault.

Police received two separate calls reporting the assault that is alleged to have occurred on Military Avenue in Fairfield, according to an affidavit in support of probable cause for Denis’ arrest prepared by Shanna Blodgett of the Fairfield Police Department.

Police contacted the alleged victim of the assault, who said she had been at a party with friends and assisted Denis to a bedroom at the house because he was too drunk to leave, according to documents at Skowhegan District Court. Denis allegedly forced the woman onto a bed and she “told Denis multiple times to stop and that she didn’t want to do this,” Blodgett wrote.

Denis reportedly left the house after the assault. The alleged victim was taken to Inland Hospital in Waterville, where a sexual assault kit was administered, according to the affidavit. A search was conducted at the house on Military Avenue, where evidence was collected.

Denis was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Somerset County Jail in East Madison. He was released on $1,000 cash bail on Wednesday.

Denis did not enter a plea this week during his initial appearance in court. Documents do not indicate that he has a lawyer yet.

A hearing is set for Nov. 23, with tentative trial dates scheduled for February.
