AUGUSTA — A former Belgrade man accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl and later contacting the victim on Facebook to urge her to tell authorities their sexual encounter was consensual was indicted by the Kennebec County grand jury on charges of gross sexual assault, tampering with a victim, violating a condition of release, unlawful sexual contact and furnishing liquor to a minor.

The indictment released Friday against Travis R. Gerrier, 22, now of Carmel, alleges he engaged in a sexual act with a child under the age of 12 June 3, 2015, in Belgrade.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.

Maine State Police, in a news release in June, said troopers responded to a report of a missing 11-year-old girl in Belgrade on June 3, 2015. Troopers joined the girl’s family for a brief search of the area until Gerrier and the girl were found a short distance from the home in an outbuilding, police said. They had consumed alcohol prior to being discovered, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for state police.

Gerrier knew the girl and was corresponding with her through Facebook, police said.

Then, in January of 2016, police allege Gerrier violated a condition of his release by contacting the victim via Facebook under a fake name and telling her she needed to tell police “that he didn’t make her do it,” according to an affidavit filed by Kennebec Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brittany Johnson.

Also indicted Friday was Daniel L. Hood, 34, of Gardiner, on two counts of unlawful sexual contact, one count of visual sexual aggression against a child, and one count of assault, all involving a child under the age of 12.

The indictment alleges Hood on Jan. 1, 2012, and Sept. 30, 2012, in Augusta subjected the child to sexual contact, caused bodily injury, and, for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire, exposed his genitals to the child or caused the child to expose his or her genitals to him.

In another indictment, Joseph P. Manganella, 35, of Augusta, is accused of two counts of arson July 5 in Gardiner.

Fire destroyed a camper mobile home where Kristie and Eric Baker, for whom Manganella had previously worked, lived with their three children. The Office of the State Fire Marshal filed the arson charges against Manganella, alleging he burned down the trailer with the intent to damage or destroy property and recklessly endangered a person or the property of another.
