After Augusta police began searching Tuesday morning for a 3-year-old girl who may have gone missing, a woman has contacted police to tell them she was with the child, Deputy Chief Jared Mills said just before noontime in a news release.

But police have not met the woman in person or verified she is with the girl, Lenore “Lenny” Wilson, Mills said.

Police began searching for Wilson early Tuesday morning after city firefighters responded to an unspecified medical emergency at a 26 Sewall St. home but could not find her at the home.

“The Augusta Police Department has developed information that Lenore is most likely in the company of 26-year-old Fatima L. Gissentaner who goes by the nickname of China,” Mills said. “Augusta police have spoken by phone with Fatima who has advised us that she was at the location of the medical emergency and is now in the company of Lenore.”

Gissentaner told police she would bring the girl to the Augusta Police Department, but hasn’t arrived yet, Mills said.

City police officers and members of the Maine State Police and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office helped search for Wilson Tuesday morning, Mills said. After interviewing witnesses, police started to suspect the girl was with a man and woman whose identity they did not know.

Police are asking anyone who has contacted Wilson or Gissentaner to contact Augusta police at 626-2370.
