A Skowhegan man was seriously injured in an automobile crash in Norridgewock Friday night. Police said speed and alcohol appeared to have been a factor.

The driver, Nicolas Poirier, 33, was taken by LifeFlight of Maine to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after having been trapped inside the vehicle on Mechanic Street in Norridgewock. Cpl. Ritchie Putnam of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said the car, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, left the road and rolled over several times before striking a tree just before 11 p.m.

Putnam said Saturday morning that Poirier was conscious and talking to rescue personnel. A nursing supervisor at the Lewiston hospital did not immediately return a call for information on Poirier’s condition Saturday.

Putnam said the car had been traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on Mechanic Street, also known as Route 8, when it failed to make a corner and went off the roadway. Personnel from the local fire department were able to free Poirier from the car.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation but speed and alcohol appear to have been a factor, he said.

The Norridgewock Fire Department, Skowhegan Fire Department, Smithfield Fire Department, Redington-Fairview EMS, Central Maine Power Co., and Chuck’s Towing, all assisted at the scene of the crash, Putnam said.
