A physician who lived in Hallowell and worked in Monmouth died Nov. 17 after an early morning car crash in Monmouth that police believe was the result of a medical emergency, said Chief Kevin Mulherin of the Monmouth Police Department.

The man, 61-year-old John P. Meserve, worked at DFD Russell Medical Centers in Monmouth. He was driving there when his car crashed on Main Street at 6:55 a.m. and rolled over, Mulherin said.

Meserve was not breathing when police arrived at the crash site, Mulherin said. He was treated at the scene and taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, but later died.

Police think Meserve died from the medical emergency and not from any injuries he sustained in the accident, Mulherin said.

“We were thinking it was a heart attack, but we don’t know,” Mulherin said. “It was just an unfortunate situation.”

No one else was involved or hurt in the crash, Mulherin added.

Meserve grew up in the Gardiner area, according to an obituary in the Portland Press Herald. During a 30-year career, he cared for patients in communities as far ranging as Kennebunk and Millinocket.
