NORRIDGEWOCK — A fire at a residence on Mechanic Street displaced a family of five on Monday night, and the state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause.
Firefighters were called to the 82 Mechanic St. home, a two-story, single-family residence the family was renting, at 7:05 p.m. Monday night, according to Norridgewock Fire Chief Dave Jones. The fire started in the upstairs bedroom and is not believed to be suspicious, Jones said, but the cause will not be released until the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s report is finished.
Crews were still at the scene Tuesday trying to determine the fire’s cause.
The fire took about half an hour to get under control and damaged the second story of the building beyond repair, Jones said Tuesday, but left the downstairs in a salvageable state. While he said the owner of the property is insured, he didn’t know if those renting the property were.
The local Red Cross Disaster Action Response Team said in a news release that it is ensuring the family has a safe place to sleep as well as food and other essentials.
