A Waterboro man who was charged in a stabbing last month was arrested again in York County on Sunday after he led police on a brief chase and used a child as a human shield while confronting officers, according to Sheriff William King.
Police were called to a home on Orchard Drive in Waterboro about 7:30 p.m. Sunday for a reported disturbance. Officers learned that Vincent Cole, 26, had been in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend but left before police arrived.
Cole, who was on bail conditions stemming from a July 7 incident in which he allegedly stabbed a bystander at a party, had a suspended driver’s license and an 8 p.m. curfew at a different address in the Lake Arrowhead community. About 9:15 p.m., deputies found Cole driving, but he refused to stop for them and fled in his car toward his home, taking a series of abrupt turns into the neighborhood.
As he approached his house, Cole opened the door and leapt from the moving car, according to King. The vehicle crashed into some debris and came to a stop when it struck a boulder, he said.
Cole then fled into his house with deputies behind him in pursuit. When confronted, Cole refused to comply with their commands and advanced toward a deputy, who drew a Taser on Cole, King said.
Cole then grabbed a child believed to be his daughter, and used her as a human shield.
The child’s mother intervened, Cole released the child and was arrested without further incident, the sheriff said.
Cole was charged with violating conditions of his release, refusing to stop for a police officer and driving to endanger, all misdemeanors. He was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, operating a motor vehicle after suspension, and failure to wear a seat belt.
The Department of Health and Human Services was also alerted because of the child’s involvement.
In the previous case, Cole allegedly assaulted two men and stabbed a bystander at a party in Waterboro, and faces a felony elevated aggravated assault charge as a result of that incident.
