I want to thank Don Roberts for declaring me the underdog in the race for Maine Senate District 15 (“Rollins has change of heart,” Jan. 13). In a David-versus-Goliath battle, I would rather be David any day.

Roberts conveniently fails to mention my own government experience and education and refers to me as the “wolf man” for my decades of volunteer work on behalf of the public’s fish and wildlife resources. He never contacted me for the opinion piece. Had he done so, he would have learned that I have more education and decades more experience in Maine state government than the Republican candidate. Had he done so, he would have learned that I have drafted legislation and I have testified many times before the Maine Legislature.

Had he done so, he would have learned why I am running for the Maine Senate. I am running because our state government is broken and I believe I have the education, experience and ability to help fix it. I am running because the people of Maine deserve a government that serves them, rather than the other way around. I am running because the people of Maine are sick and tired of a government that puts the special interests before the public interest.

While Roberts is busy with his poison pen, I’ll continue to be out meeting with and listening to the people of Augusta, China, Vassalboro, Sidney and Oakland. It is they who have the power to decide their future.
