On Saturday, April 28, the ice finally went out on Pattee Pond in Winslow. At around 6:45 p.m. my wife had the windows open, as it was the first nice day in months, when she heard cries for help. Three young kayakers had ventured out and were approximately 300 feet out into the water when a 15-year-old boy fell into the icy water and started calling out for help.

My wife called 911 and our neighbor, Gary Works, who also had heard cries for help. Works, having just put his party boat in the water that day, rushed out to save the 15-year-old.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Works for potentially saving this young man’s life, as the teen was very hypothermic and was later transported to the hospital via ambulance. He was checked over and later released. Several first responders came to the scene and, thankfully, the young man had already been saved by Mr. Works.

Great job by all. The 15-year-old was very appreciative. Neighbors looking out for neighbors.
