FARMINGTON — Franklin County Commissioners on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding about renovation to the superior court building, accepted a federal payment and set the date for a special workshop on tax increment financing.

The Franklin County Superior Court renovation, scheduled to start this week, includes carpeting and painting in the main court as well as other rooms in the building, at a cost of $29,200.

The cost will be split evenly by the county and the state.

According to Franklin County Treasurer Pam Prodan, the county also receives money from the U.S. Department of the Interior as compensation for having the Appalachian Trail run through the county. This fiscal year’s payment was $16,948. Commissioners accepted it unanimously Tuesday.

In other news Tuesday, commissioners approved the hiring of Heidi Jordan as a part-time clerk in the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office and recognized new Communications Director Carold Folsom.

They also scheduled a workshop on tax increment financing, or TIF, for 9 a.m Aug. 2.

One resident, Richard Fotter, a member of the Flagstaff Area Business Association board of directors, expressed concern that not enough people are aware of meetings such as the TIF workshop.

“The general public who are interested in things like this, if the newspapers don’t cover it and put the agenda out there or they’re not on the list to get (the agenda), how are you going to get it out there?” Fotter said. “I don’t think enough people know this is happening.”
