CASTLETON, Vt. — Grace Johnson scored just before the final horn to give Castleton State College a 10-9 victory over Thomas and its third straight North Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse championship Saturday night.

Gardiner graduate Jenn Day scored two straight goals, including one to tie the game at 9-all with 30 seconds left to play. Day finished with five goals while teammate Brittany Premo scored three and Messalonskee grad Mirnada Tinsman a goal and an assist. Ally McCarthy made 16 saves in goal for Thomas (9-6) while Rachel Bombardier made seven for Castleton (9-6).

TRINITY 13, COLBY 10: Despite a late rally, Colby fell to the top-seeded Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinals, in Hartford, Conn.

Colby (9-6) will hope for an at large NCAA Division III Tournament bid Sunday. The pairings are announced at 9:30 p.m. Trinity (14-2) will play for a fourth straight conference title.

Katharine Eddy, the NESCAC Player of the Year, had two goals and three assists for the Mules. Sarah Lux finished with two goals and two assists, while Lindsey McKenna and Katie Griffin both had two goals. Caroline Hayes led the Bantams with three goals. Martha Griffin and Shea Kusiak each had two goals and one assist.

SOFTBALL

HUSSON 7, UMF 2: A three-run fourth inning helped the Eagles take control and earn the North Atlantic Conference tournament win in Bangor.

UMF ends the season at 14-14, the most wins by the team since winning 14 games in 2010.

In the fourth, Husson’s Sami Schultz belted a solo home run to left field to open the frame. Two outs later, Kayla Merrill singled up the middle and Allison Hill drew a walk to get runners aboard. Lyndsey Merrill and Breanna Martin each had RBI singles through the left side to plate the two runners.

Hannah Lust and Erskine graduate Meryl Bond each had two hits for UMF.

THOMAS DROPS PAIR: The Terriers dropped a pair of games at the NAC championships in Bangor, losing 9-2 to Castleton State in the first game and 8-0 to Lyndon State in the second. Kelsey Crowe and Nicole Ryder drove in runs for the Terriers in the first game while Courtney Veilleux had two hits in the second. Thomas finishes its season at 15-16-1.

BASEBALL

CASTLETON 8, UMF 2: The Spartans scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning on the way to eliminating the Beavers from the North Atlantic Conference baseball tournament in Castleton, Vt.

Castleton (27-10) will face Husson for the title on Sunday. UMF ends the season at 14-22.

Conner Jackson threw a complete game for the win, giving up nine hits and one earned run. Jimmy Neal took the loss for the Beavers.

Nate Swahn drove in two runs for Castleton. Dustin McCrossin had three hits for UMF.

Earlier in the day, UMF beat Lyndon, 3-1, in an elimination game. Erskine graduate Sean Cabaniss had three hits for UMF in the win.

HUSSON 7, CASTLETON 6: The Eagles rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to down the Spartans and advance to today’s NAC championship against the same team. Jordan Carter belted a two-run double in the eighth and scored on a single by Messalonskee graduate Dylan Foster to tie the game. Husson 26-13) took the lead on a bases loaded walk from Waterville grad J.T. Whitten.

AMHERST 6-4, COLBY 3-3: Conner Gunn’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Lord Jeffs a 4-3 win and a doubleheader sweep of the Mules in NESCAC action in Amherst, Mass. Tim Corey had a pair of hits and an RBI for Colby (16-15) in the first game while Tyler Starks had two hits and Alec Finigan two RBIs in the second game. Amherst is 26-5.

MAINE 2-3, STONY BROOK 1-11: Tommy Lawrence pitched a complete game and Alex Calbrick belted a home run to lead the Black Bears to a victory in the first game of an America East doubleheader in Stony Brook, N.Y. Maine is 19-24 overall and 6-8 in conference play while Stony Brook is 26-15, 12-4.

DIV. III TRACK AND FIELD

Colby’s David Chelimo nipped Erskine graduate and Bowdoin senior Sam Seekins by a half second in the 5,000 meter run at the New England Division III track and field championships Saturday at Springfield College. Massachusetts Institute of Technology won both the men’s and women’s titles while the Colby men and women each finished seventh. Colby’s 4×400 meter relay team of Emily Doyle, McKayla Blanch, Emily Tolman and Frances Onyilagha finished second while Ethan Druskat placed second in the 100 meter dash.

Monmouth graduate and University of Southern Maine junior Kevin Desmond anchored the winning 4×400 meter relay that won the event and set a school record in a time of 3:18.08.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

MTN. VALLEY 9, MT. ABRAM 6: Winning pitcher Lindsay Marston had two doubles and an RBI while teammate Aly Carlton added two singles a pair of RBIs to lead the Falcons (4-1) to the Mountain Valley Conference win in Rumford. Jacey Davenport single, doubled and drove in three runs for Mt. Abram (1-2).

KENTS HILL 22, HEBRON 10, 5 inn.: Nina Murray drove in six runs with a grand slam, triple and single to lead the Huskies to the MAISAD win at Hebron. Cam Frawley and Cassie Canning added a pair of hits for Kents Hill (2-1) while Aimee Sala had a two-run double.
