Hopkins, her husband and son were evicted Monday from their room in Augusta, she said, following a dispute with another tenant at a boarding house. “We’re homeless,” she said. The Hopkinses took turns heating up between holding the dog, which she said isn’t permitted in the center, as temperatures struggled to reach double digits. The cold is forecast to persist for the remainder of the week.

Ernie McPherson battles sleet and snow late afternoon Wednesday while clearing out around his Farmingdale home. McPherson, 85, said he was cutting paths with a broom where his plow couldn’t reach, near the barn where he holds court with his son, Ned, and several nephews.
