Before tossing a stick for her dog Tuesday at her farm in West Gardiner, Dee Dee Douglas fed her egg roosters an extra cup of grain. “All my animals are spoiled rotten,” she said of the horses, fowl and canine that reside at the farm.

Amy Hopkins clutches her dog to her chest Monday at the Augusta Community Warming Center. Hopkins, her husband and son were evicted Monday from their room in Augusta, she said, following a dispute with another tenant at a boarding house. “We’re homeless,” she said. The Hopkinses took turns heating up between holding the dog, which she said isn’t permitted in the center, as temperatures struggled to reach double digits. The cold is forecast to persist for the remainder of the week.
