SNAPSHOT: Seeing double

A pair of Sandhill cranes stroll through a former cornfield Tuesday in Readfield. Farmer Elmer Elvin detected the pair of birds, noted for their elaborate mating rituals, late last week. The midwestern birds, pairs of which have been spotted nesting around Belgrade, are located in a plot at the intersection of Fogg and Sadie Dunn roads.

SNAPSHOT: Sand man

Jeremiah Emery sweeps sand Tuesday from the lot of the Ice Cream Shoppe in Randolph.  Emery said he was removing sand pushed by plow trucks over the winter into the lot from the adjoining business where he works.

SNAPSHOT: Up and away

Travis Frost, left, and Bob Whitehouse collect wreaths from the Togus National Cemetery Thursday.  Hundreds of the pine wreaths that adorned the gravestone of soldiers over the winter were being collected and disposed of by the grounds crew at the federal veterans’ hospital.

Kennebec Ice Arena demolition under way

Cianbro workers commence razing the Kennebec Ice Arena in Hallowell Tuesday morning. The 40-year-old rink is being demolished after its collapse in early March. Management still hopes to build a new facility, according to part owner Rosy Santerre. The rink’s remains are expected to be demolished and removed in three weeks.
