A pair of Sandhill cranes stroll through a former cornfield Tuesday in Readfield. Farmer Elmer Elvin detected the pair of birds, noted for their elaborate mating rituals, late last week. The midwestern birds, pairs of which have been spotted nesting around Belgrade, are located in a plot at the intersection of Fogg and Sadie Dunn roads.

Anita Chandler clutches a hen Sunday from the flock of chickens that roost at her family’s East Monmouth farm. Chandler said the hen is kept as a pet since it lays green eggs.

Jeremiah Emery sweeps sand Tuesday from the lot of the Ice Cream Shoppe in Randolph.  Emery said he was removing sand pushed by plow trucks over the winter into the lot from the adjoining business where he works.
