How much would you be willing to give to a complete stranger in dire need?
Bill Nemitz
Bill Nemitz has worked as a journalist in Maine since 1977, when he became a reporter for the Morning Sentinel in Waterville after graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
He moved to Portland in 1983, working first as a reporter for the Evening Express and later as a city editor and assistant managing editor/sports for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. He began writing his column in 1995. While focusing on Maine people and issues, his work has taken him three times to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan, where he was embedded with members of the Maine Army National Guard and the Army Reserve; to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the 1998 referendum on the Good Friday Peace Accord; to Manhattan for the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks; to the Gulf Coast for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; and to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. Nemitz is a past president of the Maine Press Association and for many years taught journalism part-time at St. Joseph's College of Maine in Standish. He also served for eight years, including three as chairman, on the board of trustees for the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland. In 2004, the Maine Press Association named Nemitz Maine Journalist of the Year for his reporting on the Maine Army National Guard’s 133rd Engineer Battalion in Iraq. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the New England Newspaper Association. In 2015, Nemitz was inducted into the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame. Nemitz lives in Buxton with his wife, Andrea. They have five children and four grandchildren.
Bill Nemitz: Booze battle looming for 2014 election
Here’s a can’t-miss prediction for Maine’s 2014 gubernatorial race: Before it’s done, we’re going to hear a lot about booze.
Bill Nemitz: LePage’s charges on charters off the charts
He loves to rant and rant and rant about what’s wrong with Maine schools. If only Gov. Paul LePage would put the same energy into doing his homework. “Unfortunately, the governor seems to be more interested in bullying people than really understanding what people are doing,” observed Jana LaPoint, chairwoman of the Maine Charter School […]
Bill Nemitz: State House drama is made for TV
As the 126th Maine Legislature lumbers into action this week, let the record show that Democrats and Republicans alike already agree on one thing. They all want to be on television. Not to worry — we’re not talking about one of those over-hyped, bottom-of-the-barrel reality shows. (Although “Lawmakers Gone Wild” would undoubtedly give “Toddlers and […]
Bill Nemitz: Dysfunction no mystery to new Maine Speaker
If ever there was a time when Augusta needs a certified family therapist, this is it . . .
BILL NEMITZ: Former SAM executive director, anti-gun forces break bread to take weapons from dangerous people
It had the makings of a great editorial cartoon — except it actually happened.
Elected to the House: Winthrop’s Hickman a no-nonsense ‘walking improbability’
I have two words for Republicans who wonder, in the wake of last week’s shellacking at the polls, what Maine’s resurgent Democrats have that they don’t:
Bill Nemitz: Linda Bean evokes Hitler in rant on Obama
Is Barack Obama comparable to a man who helped murder 11 million people? One Maine lobster-roll saleswoman says “yes.”
Bill Nemitz: For enemy of gay marriage, untruths best told quickly
Frank Schubert likes to tell stories. Really, really short and scary stories.
Republicans finding alignment on same-sex marriage
