BELFAST — Essentially competing against herself, Waterville senior Bethanie Brown took a run at the course record Saturday at the high school cross country state championships.

BELFAST — Hall-Dale coach Chris Poulin figured his boys cross country team would need to have its best race of the season to win its first state championship since 1988. It did.

GARDINER — Wins have been tough to come by for the Gardiner football team on its home field this season. And there was nothing easy about the Tigers’ 26-14 playoff victory against Brewer at Hoch Field on Friday night. The Tigers dominated time of possession but had trouble scoring inside the 10-yard line and weren’t able to pull away until late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dennis Meehan threw a 23-yard strike to Josh Moore in the end zone.

It’s been a year since Bethanie Brown finished second at the Class B cross country state championship meet. Since then, the Waterville senior has pulled away from the pack, bettering her 5K times of last year by more than a minute this fall.

Coach Chris Poulin hopes his Hall-Dale boys cross country team has saved its best race of the season for Saturday’s state championship meet at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast. The Bulldogs will probably need it to win their first Class C state title since 1988.
