SOFTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR: Gaslin leads Rams to first title since 1983
It seemed just a matter of time before Rocky Gaslin would coach the Cony High School softball team to a state championship. In his eight years as head coach, the Rams have been in the mix each season, losing the state title game in 2006.

MANCHESTER — Mark Plummer took a little ribbing about the royal blue hat he wore at the Maine Open on Wednesday. Emblazoned on the front were three large white letters, “ACC,” in honor of the tournament site, Plummer’s home course, the Augusta Country Club.

CHARLIE’S MAINE OPEN NOTEBOOK: Course at ACC comes out on top
MANCHESTER — A number of contenders emerged at the Charlie’s Maine Open on Tuesday, but the clear-cut winner was the Augusta Country Club course. The expected assault on the 6,350-yard, par 70 course never materialized as only nine in the field of 156 players were in red numbers.

GOLF: Shuman sponsors Maine Open, helps raise scholarship funds
The Subaru dealership Charlie Shuman acquired 25 years ago on Western Avenue in Augusta has grown into eight separate franchises, all under the umbrella of Charlie’s Motor Mall. Beginning with 17 employees, Charlie’s now has 240 people working for the company, which sells more than 6,000 vehicles a year, making it the state’s largest dealership in one location.

STANDISH — Cony High School junior Sonja Morse was nearly perfect Saturday in leading the Rams to a 2-0 victory against South Portland for the Class A state softball championship.
