While the road race season is winding down, there are still plenty of opportunities for runners to get in on an organized race in central Maine. Here’s a look at the area races over the rest of September:

WATERVILLE — When Thomas College men’s cross country coach Kerry Smart brings a potential recruit on campus, Will Janakis wants to talk to the high school kid.

Colby had its first football practice Wednesday afternoon, and although the Mules have only five seniors on their roster, head coach Jonathan Michaeles thinks maturity could be a strength with this team.

The Hall-Dale boys made a surprising run to a state championship last season. After finishing eighth at the state meet in 2011, the Bulldogs placed four runners in the top 18 to win the Class C title last fall.

If the enrollment cutoffs had stayed the same, Eastern Maine field hockey would have had an abundance of teams in Class B, and not so many in Class A and Class C. That left some tough and important decisions for many teams, particularly Winslow and Mt. View.

The last time Sabrina Vaillancourt played competitive field hockey, she scored five goals for Husson University in the North Atlantic Conference championship game last fall against Castleton.

The Gardiner Area High School boys soccer team is using a road race as a fundraiser. In this case, it’s the inaugural Run for the Goal 5K, which begins at 9 a.m., Sunday.
