With Gardiner’s victory over Franklin County in a game that finished Friday evening, the field is finally set for this weekend’s American Legion Zone 2 Baseball tournament.

A new feature of the American Legion Zone 2 Baseball tournament this year is a pair of “play-in” games to decide the final two teams in this weekend’s Zone tournament.

The fall sports season will be on us before you know it. Another example of that is that the annual Battle For Breast Cancer Central Maine Field Hockey Challenge is coming up on Friday.

Eastern A is a tough softball league, but Lawrence coach Joey Marcoux still believed at the start of the season that his team could contend for a playoff spot. Then the games started and mistakes piled up. After five games, Lawrence had won once and the losses were by scores like 19-0 and 14-1.

Sharon Coulton has coached the Ramblers the last 32 years, winning her 300th game last fall when Winthrop defeated Dexter 1-0 in the Eastern Maine Class C regional final. Winthrop went 15-2-1 last year and 13-3-2 in 2011, losing in the Class C state final both years.

Marjorie Scott describes the Athens Victory Club as “a group of civic-minded ladies.” They raise money for things like giving quilts to every newborn baby in town, making donations to the fire and recreation departments, and giving gas cards to cancer patients who have to travel for regular treatments.

The Bond Brook 5K Trail Race Series begins Thursday at the Bond Brook Recreation Area in Augusta. The series expanded from six to eight races last summer and will again consist of eight races this year.
