AUGUSTA — Wednesday evening’s Zone 2 American Legion Baseball game between Gardiner and The Red Barn was a chess match. It had a few chances for redemption. It was a marathon. A slugfest that was finally clinched by a stellar relief performance.

CLASS A SOFTBALL: Scarborough tops Skowhegan for state title
The deluge from Scarborough started with a leadoff home run by Marisa O’Toole and just kept coming. Scarborough scored four times in the first two innings and went on to a 9-3 victory over Skowhegan in the Class A softball final Saturday afternoon at Cony Family Field.

Madison is making its first appearance in the Class C state softball final since 1998. The Bulldogs’ opponent is Bucksport, a team that is appearing in its third consecutive state championship game.

It was where people expected top-ranked Madison to be Thursday night and the Bulldogs made it happen by simply playing their game. Emily McKenney pitched well again and Madison had 16 hits in a 10-3 victory over No. 2 Dirigo in the Western C final.

Jamie Plummer pitched a perfect game — allowing only one ball out of the infield — as the Bobcats defeated No. 2 Greenville 12-0 in the Western D final in a game stopped in the bottom of the fifth inning by the mercy rule.
