WINSLOW — Coaches will sometimes tell you that things like hustle never go into slumps. So after Winslow coach Lindsey Welch watched her team shoot 14 percent from the floor and 33 percent from the line in the first half, she and the Black Raiders still went to the locker room with a 10-point lead.

WINSLOW — The Winslow boys basketball team knew it couldn’t last all game. But for the Black Raiders and their fans, it was more than a lot of fun while it lasted.

Messalonskee surprised quite a few girls basketball observers by beating Brewer 38-31 on Tuesday night. Brewer had defeated Mt. Blue, one of the preseason favorites in Eastern A, and the Eagles were coming off a 24-point loss to Bangor and a 16-point loss to Lawrence.

READFIELD — For every basketball team with low confidence, there is an opponent taking advantage. On Friday night, Maranacook girls coach Jeannine Paradis felt the game might have been different if her team had more confidence. On the other side, Nokomis coach Michelle Paradis thought the same thing.

Maranacook graduate Ryan Martin scored his 1,000th career point at Keene State College last week, topping the milestone in less than two-and-half seasons. Martin, who transferred from Division I Maine, is in his final year of eligibility.
