After a few seasons with low participation numbers, the Gardiner Area High School field hockey team will have more players out when it begins practice this morning for the upcoming season.

Everybody, meet Tom. A carny for 18 years, Tom is telling me how easy this game is. All I have to do is bounce the ball off of the picture of Ben Franklin and into the bin that sits directly below the picture. HARNESS RACING: Real Special win
SKOWHEGAN — Real Special was already having a good season on the harness racing circuit. It got a little better Saturday with a win in the Walter H. Hight Memorial Pace at the Skowhegan State Fair.
HARNESS RACING: Big money at stake at Hight Invitational
SKOWHEGAN — Unlike many years, last month’s Paul Bunyan Invitational at Bangor Raceway did not provide a preview of the Walter H. Hight Invitational. Mr. Perseverance, the winner of the Paul Bunyan, will not race the Hight Invitational today at the Skowhegan State Fair. Two horses in today’s race, Real Special and Haveford Hanover, did race in the Paul Bunyan. Real Special finished third, while Haveford Hanover was fourth.

The Amsterdam Arena, in the midst of an Ajax soccer game, was the loudest place Chris DelGiudice had ever been. When a player on Roda JC, Ajax’s opponent was awarded a penalty kick, the arena got even louder.

The number 9 is the magic number on the University of Maine football team. It’s passed down from defensive star to defensive star like a family heirloom. By now, Maine’s opponents in the Colonial Athletic Association should know that the guy charging at you with the 9 on his jersey is the baddest Black Bear of them all.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Carey, McCabe hope to eventually make impact
ORONO — John McCabe is starting his third season with the University of Maine football team. Spencer Carey is one of the newest Black Bears, a member of the freshmen Class of 2017. Both central Maine natives are eager to begin contributing on the field for Maine, whether it’s this season or later.
BABE RUTH BASEBALL: In good shape, Central Maine rests
With a day off in the middle of the New England Babe Ruth 13-15-year-old regional tournament, Central Maine players and coaches relaxed on Monday. The team had batting practice scheduled for the late afternoon, and planned to watch the evening’s elimination game between Braintree, Mass. and Newtown, Conn.
