HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Waterville stays hot, beats Nokomis
NEWPORT — There might not be a boys basketball team playing better in Eastern Maine Class B than Waterville Senior High School right now. Thursday’s 64-47 win at Nokomis was the eighth win in a row for the Purple Panthers, who have jumped from a team on the playoff bubble to a club that will likely host a preliminary round game when the tournament starts.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL NOTES: Messalonskee moves up with big wins
After close loss upon close loss, the Messalonskee High School boys basketball team earned a pair of big wins this past week. With victories over Lawrence and Brewer the Eagles jumped from 10th place in the Eastern A standings and out of the playoffs all the way to sixth and back into the tournament field.

Now in his eighth season as Mt. Blue’s head wrestling coach, Bob O’Connor will retire following this season. He goes out with a talented senior class, many of whom he’s coached since the days of pee wee wrestling.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mt. Blue’s Kendall in line for award
When the Mt. Blue High School football team played at Gardiner in the regular season, Gardiner quarterback Dennis Meehan had some success running to the side patrolled by Mt. Blue defensive end Zak Kendall. When the teams met for a rematch in the Pine Tree Conference Class B semifinals, Kendall was ready.

It felt cold, but it could have felt colder. It could have been like it was a few days earlier, when bitter winter winds would have made this a brutal proposition. A bright blue, almost cloudless sky hung above the Quarry Hill trails and the temperature was around 12 degrees.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Winslow earns 10th straight win
PITTSFIELD — On Friday night, the Winslow High School boys basketball team won its 10th consecutive game, taking a 64-41 win at Maine Central Institute. The game was a display of everything that the Black Raiders have done well this season. They attacked the Huskies with a balanced offense and were relentless on defense, forcing 30 MCI turnovers.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL NOTES: Big stretch on tap for Valley
The Valley High School boys basketball team is in third place in the Western D standings, behind Hyde and Forest Hills. With games against both those schools in the next six days, the Cavaliers can take over the top spot in the region.
BOXING: Berry ready to turn pro
Brandon Berry is about to begin the biggest two weeks of his amateur boxing career. After fights on the next two Saturdays, including a bout at Boston’s TD Garden this weekend, Berry, 25, will become a professional boxer.
