AUGUSTA — The Scot Laliberte Invitational has become a showcase for some of the best cross country runners in the state. This year’s race will see two new winners. Last year’s girls winner, Erzsie Nagy of Lawrence, will miss the race due to injury, and last year’s boys winner, Harlow Ladd of Messalonskee, graduated and moved on to Purdue University.

GOLF: Hayes wins Match Play title
Johnny Hayes IV, playing out of Prouts Neck Country Club, shot 7-under par on the front nine in the championship round to build an insurmountable lead. Play ended on the 14th hole of Natanis Golf Course’s Tomahawk course, with Hayes taking a 6 and 4 win.

GOLF: After delay, semifinals set at Match Play Invitational
Two rounds of the Match Play Invitational were scheduled for Thursday at Natnis Golf Course’s Tomahawk course, but when heavy rain in the morning suspended the quarterfinal round with two of the four matches still competing, officials elected to push the semifinals to this morning at 8 a.m., with the championship round to follow.

GOLF: Alvarez still alive in Match Play after marathon day
Joe Alvarez, of Penobscot Valley Country Club, needed 24 holes to beat Mike Doran in the first round. In the second round, Alvarez needed 21 holes to defeat top-seed Ricky Jones. In all, Alvarez played two and a half rounds of golf, 45 holes, on the Natanis Golf Course’s Tomahawk course, and he’ll be back at it at 7 this morning in the quarterfinals.

JUNIOR LEGION BASEBALL: Post 14 wins state title
Tri-Town tied the Junior Legion baseball state championship game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Post 14 came back and scored in the bottom of the eighth to win 4-3 to win its first state championship.
