Travis Lazarczyk has covered sports for the Portland Press Herald since 2021. A Vermont native, he graduated from the University of Maine in 1995 with a BA in English. After a few years working as a sports information director and in the ski industry, he began his journalism career at the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter in 1999. Prior to joining the Press Herald, Lazarczyk spent 20 years covering sports in central Maine at the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal. He's been twice honored as the Maine Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.
SOCCER: Locals help team win regionals
The Portland Phoenix Under-20 men’s soccer team won the Northeast Region with a 4-2 win over the Massachusetts Bulldogs last week. With the win, the Phoenix earned a spot in the national tournament later this month in Tampa, Fla.

MORNING SENTINEL BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Waterville’s Bishop ends iron-man streak with 2nd title
It appears the only thing that’s going to keep Kyle Bishop out of the Waterville Senior High School baseball team’s lineup is graduation. Since starting his first varsity game as a freshman in 2008, Bishop played in 80 consecutive games for the Purple Panthers.
MORNING SENTINEL BASEBALL COACH OF THE YEAR: Dan Stefanilo leads turnaround at Mt. Blue
A season can’t slip away after a bad season opener can it? It can, but after a 9-1 loss at Lawrence on opening day, Mt. Blue High School baseball coach Dan Stefanilo wouldn’t let his team dwell on the negatives. In his post game talk with the team, Stefanilo pointed towards the Lawrence dugout.

A good tennis player wanted to get better. A good coach was eager to help. Waterville Senior High School senior Thomas Greenspan and boys tennis coach Jim Begin were the perfect combination of determination and mentoring.

The best athlete to ever wear the blue and white of the University of Maine retired on Wednesday. The victim of too many blows to the head resulting in too many concussions, Paul Kariya and his doctor decided it’s not worth risking his long term health to continue to play hockey.
BASKETBALL: KV YMCA men’s league keeps players involved
AUGUSTA — Sean McNally said his competitive fire is gone, that it dried up and blew away as soon as the University of Maine men’s basketball team ended the 2010-11 season with a loss to Hartford in the first round of the America East tournament in March.

On the first day of the USA Snowboard Association national championships, Jake Warn broke his wrist during a practice run. Jake, 11, a fifth grader at Winslow Elementary School, was afraid his first trip to nationals was over before it really began.
