RSU 9 battles elevated lead levels in water fixtures

School resumed Monday, May 9, as Regional School Unit 9 figures out long-term steps to lower levels of lead in water fixtures across the district.

Nearly half of Regional School Unit 9’s drinking-water fixtures have tested for levels of lead that exceed state guidelines.

Voters also elected Dean Collins as a selectperson over incumbent Tracey Dunham.

“I felt that the people there at that meeting, if they wanted me, they’d vote for me,” Collins said of his surprise election.

The appointment comes amid the departure of nine faculty members at the University of Maine at Farmington.

On the warrant are budgetary items and an election for a three-year seat on the Select Board.

The annual budget meeting, to be held May 24, will offer voters the opportunity to approve spending items for a final referendum vote June 14.

Irish’s last day will be August 10, a few days after the 2022 Wilton Blueberry Festival.

The Regional School Unit 9 budget approved by directors is a $100,703 decrease from the original proposal.

The board sent two of four articles to the 2022 Town Meeting warrant articles that would amend Wilton’s zoning ordinance.
