The state reported 9 more deaths on Wednesday even as hospitals‘ patient numbers continue to drop.

The average number of positive test results received by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention each day has been nearly cut in half just in the past week.

The high total reflects the reality that even though the omicron surge appears to be waning, it’s still having a devastating impact.

Cases continue to rise in schools, however, and the state reported 18 more deaths Thursday, bringing the pandemic total to 1,777.

Despite recent declines, hospitals continue to get federal help and assistance from Maine Army National Guard members because of the high caseloads and staff shortages.
