In-state case of EEE detected in Maine for 1st time in nearly a decade

An adult from Penobscot County developed severe eastern equine encephalitis symptoms early last month and remains hospitalized, the Maine CDC says.

Mosquito-borne illnesses have now been found in 13 of Maine’s 16 counties.

Health officials believe the resident, who has not recently left the state, represents the first locally acquired case of the disease since 2020.
