Maine unemployment stood at 3.2% in February

The state’s unemployment rate is expected to increase dramatically in March as a result of mass layoffs tied to the coronavirus outbreak.

Nearly 5,000 Mainers have claimed unemployment since Sunday, putting Maine on track to surpass the highest weekly total since the Great Recession.

January gains of about 400 jobs were attributed to hiring at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

December’s preliminary unemployment rate of 2.9% marks the 48th consecutive month of rates below 4%.
