AUGUSTA — Democrat Lori Fowle unseated incumbent Republican Karen Foster in House District 58.
Unofficial results show Fowle with 2,513 votes and Foster with 2,069.
Vassalboro, where Fowle lives, gave her a large boost. Foster, who lives in Augusta, carried a narrow lead in Augusta and Windsor.
“My first reaction was ‘Wow,’” Fowle said this morning. “My mouth dropped a couple of times with the results. I’m really impressed with the voter turnout in Vassalboro, Windsor and Augusta.”
She also had just received a phone call from Foster congratulating her on the win, and said she intended to talk with her more in the future about bills Foster had been working on on behalf of the communities.
“My first plan is to get my feet underneath me and learn the process of how things are done,” Fowle said. “I have learning curve ahead of me.”
Fowle, 50, served nine years on the school board and has been on the budget committee for four years. She owned Prime Cut hair salon in the Waterville Concourse for 10 years before selling it in 1998 to stay home and raise three children.
District 58, which serves Vassalboro, Windsor and the northeast section of Augusta, had been Republican since 2005, the same year the makeup of the district changed with reapportionment.
“I feel as though I disappointed a lot of people but I put in my best effort,” said Foster, who is in her first term in the Legislature. “The Democrats ran a really strong ground game and as I hard as I worked, I just was not successful.”
Foster, 68, who spent six years as a city councilor in Augusta, is a retired florist who owned EF Flowers & Co. for 20 years.
Here are the unofficial vote totals in the district:
Augusta: Fowle 516; Foster, 540
Windsor: Fowle 581; Foster, 626
Vassalboro: Fowle 1,416; Foster, 903.
