HALLOWELL – The Winslow boys hockey team has had its way with rival Gardiner in recent years, winning eight of its last 11 meetings heading into the annual showdown Thursday.

The Tigers, however, are re-writing the script to this series.

Seth Wing scored two goals and Hunter Belanger added a goal and two assists to lead Gardiner past Winslow 6-3 in a Class B crossover game at Bank of Maine Ice Vault.

“We needed this,” Gardiner coach Jeff Ross said. “It’s a big win in a rivalry game. It was nice to see us put some pucks in the back of the net,.”

Austin Moore had three assists for Gardiner (2-6-1), which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Gardiner earned a second straight victory over Winslow for the first time since the 2008-09 regular season.

Brody Thompson had a goal and an assist to lead the Raiders (2-8-0).

“We didn’t play well in the first two periods,” Winslow coach Corey Lessard said. “We didn’t deserve to win. We just didn’t play a full game.”

Alex Nadeau, Dalton Sergent and Logan Peacock also scored for the Tigers, who led 2-0 after the first period before scoring twice in the opening five minutes of the second to put the game out of reach.

Wing made it 3-0 when he pounced on a rebound out in front of Winslow goalie Cam Tibbetts and stuffed the puck into an open net just 1:24 into the period and the Tigers on the power play.

Sargent scored about three minutes later and the Tigers were off and running.

“Our power play has been working for us, and we’ve been getting some opportunities,” Ross said. “It was a good all-around effort (Thursday).”

Gardiner had three consecutive power plays late in the first period.

Winslow killed the first two, but Gardiner finally capitalized on its third attempt.

Wing took a pass from Josh Moore from inside the lower right circle and beat Tibbetts with a low shot to the near post with 1:39 left in the period.

“The penalties hurt us,” Lessard said. “It was hard to come back mentally.”

Peacock, a freshman, made it 2-0 just 49 seconds later when he tipped in a shot from out front.

Alex Berard and Jacob Boudreau also scored for the Raiders.
