Police attribute crash to medical condition

RICHMOND — A medical condition is being blamed for a single-vehicle crash early Thursday on U.S. Route 201 near the intersection with Main Street that sent the driver to the hospital.

Richmond Police Officer Josh Staples said William Blodgett, 54, of Livermore Falls, was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after the crash.

Staples said a witness reported following a Dodge Durango that was “all over the road pretty much from the Gardiner line.” The witness turned onto a driveway and saw the car he had been following make a turn where he knew there was no driveway, then found that the car had gone off the road and hit some trees.

Staples said he arrived to find Blodgett drifting in and out of consciousness. “I had to take the window out to get at him, because the car was locked,” he said.

The Richmond Fire Department assisted at the scene, and Northeast Ambulance took Blodgett to the hospital.
