Lodge fire’s cause remains unknown

FAYETTE — A State Fire Marshal’s Office official said a rental lodge on Echo Lake was so badly damaged by fire Tuesday the cause of the fire cannot be determined.

Sgt. Kenneth Grimes said the fire’s cause has been deemed undetermined, and because of the extensive damage, unless additional information comes forward, it may remain undetermined.

Fire destroyed the main lodge of Echo Lake Lodge and Cottages on Tuesday in Fayette. The property is owned by James and Evelyn Feagin, who rented out the lodge, and several cottages nearby that were not damaged.

Grimes said the fire appeared to start in the upper reaches of the building’s second floor, as did Glen Craig, a former owner of the property who was the first to see and report the fire Tuesday morning.

James Feagin speculated at the fire scene that an ember from a fire in the lodge’s fireplace could have started a chimney fire that eventually spread to the rest of the building. He said the lodge was occupied over the weekend by renters who left Sunday.

The lodge was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The lodge was built in 1936 and was a sporting camp for many years.

Grimes said anyone with information about what might have caused the fire can contact the fire marshal’s office.
