HARTFORD, Conn. — A group that promotes power reliability says the Northeast will have an adequate supply of electricity this summer, even during extreme weather.
The Northeast Power Coordinating Council Inc. released its annual summer reliability assessment on Thursday. The region includes New York, the six New England states, the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Québec. The region’s population numbers more than 55 million.
The assessment considered severe system limits such as extended maintenance, higher than expected outages and extreme weather such as heat waves with high humidity.
Coal units in Ontario are being phased out and the Salem Harbor power station in Massachusetts is being closed.
Edward Schwerdt, president and chief executive, said it’s a sizable loss of generating capacity. But reliability is maintained with coordination, improved transmission capacity and more power generation.
