A Sandy River Plantation couple was taken to the hospital after a single-car crash Thursday in northern Franklin County.

Richard Hill, 80, was driving in Sandy River Plantation around 1:30 p.m. when he fell asleep and the car swerved off the road, according to Lt. David Rackliffe, of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

Hill was driving on Main Street near the intersection with Beaver Lane when his car swerved off the road to the right side, hit a culvert and went briefly airborne before coming to a stop, Rackliffe said.

He said Richard Hill and his wife, Beverly, 73, were removed from their car by the Rangeley Fire Department and taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

Their car was destroyed in the accident, Rackliffe said.

Rackliffe said the couple suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, but each had cuts to the head and arms and Beverly Hill also reported chest pain.
