In the Aug. 11 letter to the editor headlined, “Confiscating guns is first step to deny our freedom,” the writer falsely claims that Michael Bloomberg and his gun violence prevention organization, Everytown for Gun Safety, support gun confiscation. This statement is completely unfounded, and so is the writer’s inaccurate statement that the organization is “anti-gun.”

Everytown, which encompasses Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, supports the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership. In fact, many of its members are gun owners. Moreover, the organization’s efforts to reduce gun violence are in keeping with its belief that protecting the Second Amendment goes hand-in-hand with support for common-sense safety measures.

One such measure is support for criminal background checks for private gun sales to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and other dangerous people — a proposal that is supported by 90 percent of Americans and 82 percent of gun owners.

We believe there is no contradiction between support of responsible gun ownership and support of common-sense measures that will keep our children safe. No child should be denied the freedom to grow up in a safe community.
