LEWISTON — Police are investigating the death of a baby boy who was left in a bathtub by his father in a Lewiston apartment on Monday afternoon.

The baby’s father, Sean St. Amand, 27, put the 11-month-old boy in the bathtub with the child’s 2-year-old sister and then left the room, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

When the father later checked on the children, the boy was unresponsive. The baby was pronounced dead on arrival at Central Maine Medical Center, McCausland said.

The boy’s mother, Jennifer Everett, 28, was also in the apartment at 125 Pierce St., taking a nap at the time, according to police.

Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle said detectives have interviewed both St. Amand and Everett but neither has been charged.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office. The state medical examiner’s office was expected to complete an autopsy of the baby boy on Tuesday, but authorities did not immediately release any results.

McGonagle said the 2-year-old girl is in her parents’ custody for the time being.

“This is a very unfortunate incident but it’s also a wake-up call and a reminder that you have to watch these kids every second,” he said. “You can’t take your eyes off them.”

Both St. Amand and Everett have prior criminal convictions, according to the state Bureau of Identification.

St. Amand was convicted in 2012 of trespassing, theft, refusing to submit to arrest and violation of bail terms. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Everett was convicted in 2011 and fined $500 for allowing a minor to possess or consume liquor.

The two-story, six-unit apartment building at 125 Pierce St. was devoid of activity Tuesday.

There was a broken window at the front of the building, 2-foot-tall weeds growing through concrete near the steps and a pair of child strollers gathering rainwater on the sidewalk.

The apartment where St. Amand and Everett live is on the first floor. The mailbox belonging to St. Amand and Everett also listed two other names on it.

Many residents of Pierce Street said they had heard about what happened, but no one wanted to talk about it on Tuesday.

“Just leave them alone,” said one man. “They are going through enough.”

No one answered the door early Tuesday afternoon, but a sign hung on the doorknob from a local flower shop, alerting Everett that she had missed a delivery.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified placed a small stuffed animal on the porch as a tribute. He said it belonged to his daughter.
