LEWISTON — Facing the top seed in Eastern Class A, the eighth-seeded Mt. Blue boys soccer team could not pull off the upset in a 6-0 loss to top-seeded Lewiston Tuesday.

“We were playing well going into the playoffs to put ourselves in a good position, but Lewiston is a great team,” Mt. Blue coach Joel Smith said. “They are probably one of the best No. 1 seeds I’ve seen and we’ve been the No. 8 seed for three out of the last four years. They’re definitely the class of Eastern A. They are the team to beat, no doubt about it.”

According to Smith, the Cougars got strong performances out of Evan Backus, Drew Parsons, Devon Hoyt and Colton Lawrence in the loss.

“My guys didn’t quit. That was clear,” Smith said. “They battled right to the end.”

NO. 2 BRUNSWICK 3, NO. 7 MESSALONSKEE 0: The Eagles fell behind 1-0 heading into halftime on a direct kick for the Dragons, which would prove to be enough to advance.

“We played pretty well,” Messalonskee coach Tom Sheridan said. “We just came up short in a few situations.”

Jonah Webb had a strong game in net for the Eagles with eight saves, while Elija Tuell, James Kouletsis, Tanner Burton, Noah Caret, Jack Moore and Nathan Violette each played well.

“Overall I’m really happy with how the season went,” Sheridan said. “Losing Jonah Webb in goal and Elijah Tulip will be hard to replace.

“We have some holes to fill like any other team but I think we’ll sort it out.”
