AUGUSTA — The Cony boys basketball team last played a game Feb. 3 against Edward Little in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A regular season finale.

The Rams spent the better part of last week practicing and scrimmaging in preparation of their Eastern A quarterfinal game Saturday night against Lewiston.

“We were ready to go,” Cony senior captain Liam Stokes said. “We’ve been tired of waiting.”

Stokes and the Rams found out Saturday the wait would be extended a few more days.

With yet another winter storm bearing down on the region, the Maine Principals’ Association postponed a host of tournament games Saturday, including the night session at the Augusta Civic Center.

No. 4 Lewiston (11-7) and No. 5 Cony (11-7) will now play their regional quarterfinal Monday at 10 a.m. at the Civic Center. No. 1 Edward Little (17-1) and No. 8 Brewer (8-11) will follow at 11:30.

It marks the second consecutive season that inclement weather altered the Eastern A boys tournament schedule.

“We did this last year,” said Lewiston coach Tim Farrar. “We’ll be ready to go. We could play at midnight or 3 in the morning. Whatever. This really could be one of the best games of the day, but more practice won’t make the game any better. We just need to go out there and play.”

“We really wanted to play (Saturday),” added Cony coach T.J. Maines, whose team dropped two games to Lewiston in the regular season (77-69 and 63-61). “We were prepared to play. But, really, this isn’t a big deal for us. We have a couple guys nicked up so a few extra days will help them get healthy. I’m sure the kids are disappointed but it is what it is. We have to move on.

Maines added he isn’t too concerned with the lengthy layoff.

“We haven’t played in two weeks,” he said. “Obviously, we would’ve liked to play more than we have. But (we) got our work in. We got our stuff ready and we got mentally geared up for what we have to do. There are no excuses. We have to go out and play.”

The Rams scrimmaged Class B teams Medomak and Lincoln to tune up for the regional tournament. They also practiced for about an hour and a half Saturday morning.

“We were going to have a shoot-around anyway so it worked out,” Stokes said. “We put some shots up. We knew the (postponement) was a possibility. I don’t think this will affect us. We’ll be ready to go.”

The postponements Saturday altered the tournament schedule in the coming days.

The Western C quarterfinal game times Monday at the Civic Center are unchanged, with the afternoon session set to tip off at 2:30 p.m. The MPA bumped the Western D girls quarterfinals to Tuesday, creating an eight-game, single admission day at the Civic Center.
